Re-entry to Practice Program Information for Nurses

Under Section 50(7) of the Nursing Act, 1995, "a nurse who has not practised for a period exceeding five (5) years must satisfy the Board that the nurse is competent to practice."

Re-entry to practice programs are available to nurses (registered and enrolled) who have not practised nursing for more that five (5) years and who fulfil the Board's requirements.

To assist the Board in determining your requirements please complete the questionnaire, providing as much detailed information as possible. Board approval must be given prior to commencement of either of the following programs.

Entry to Practice Program for Enrolled Nurses

Brief Description of Program

The program is a self directed learning package comprising of theoretical and practical components. It is based on the ANMC National Competency Standards for Registered and Enrolled Nurses. Participants must successfully complete both the theoretical and practical modules and be able to demonstrate competence in order to be eligible for registration.

Location of Program

The clinical practice module must be undertaken at a hospital that has Nursing Board of Tasmania accredited preceptors/assessors. The preceptor/assessor is responsible for verifying to the Board that a nurse is competent for registration. Nurses are expected to negotiate their own contract for clinical practice at an approved hospital.

Length of Program

The theoretical component is self paced with the average time taken to complete this being eight weeks. The clinical practice component must be sufficient to allow the participant to demonstrate competence. This must not exceed twelve weeks full time equivalent. The average time taken to demonstrate competence skills is eight weeks.

Post Registration (Re-entry) Program for Registered Nurses

Brief Description of Program

This program consists of theoretical and clinical practice units. Participants must successfully complete the program, be able to demonstrate the ANMC National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse and be recommended by the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Tasmania in order to be eligible to renew their practising certificate.

Length of Program

To be advised by the School of Nursing & Midwifery once the application process has been completed.

Duplicate Certificates

Duplicate copies of registration certificates and annual practising certificates are available upon request. A completed statutory declaration form and identification is required to obtain a duplicate certificate. The statutory declaration provides the following information.
  • Current full names, Date of Birth, Current Address and Register/Roll
  • Registration number/s
  • Signature of applicant
  • Signature of witness
  • Payment of fee


    Application for Restoration of Name to the Register

    A person whose name has been removed from the register or roll or whose registration/enrolment has lapsed is entitled to apply to have their name restored to the register upon completion of an Application for Restoration of name to the Register/Roll and payment of the appropriate fee.

    Request restoration application form
    Send completed application form, identification and evidence of employment as a nurse (if it has been greater than five (5) years since employed in Tasmania) along with appropriate fee to the Board.
