Recency of Practice Requirements
Competence to Practice Policy 2004

The Nursing Board of Tasmania recognises that, in the interests of public health and safety, nurses must be competent in their practise. Section 3 of the Nursing Act 1995 defines nursing practice as including nursing clinical practice, nursing education practice, nursing management practice and nursing research practice.

In order to meet the requirements of the Nursing Act 1995 and the Board's policy, applicants for entry to the register or roll, for authorisation to practise as a midwife and for restoration to the register or roll must provide satisfactory evidence of relevant nursing practice during the five years preceding the date of the application.

Pursuant to s50(6) the Board must not issue a new practising certificate to a nurse who has not actively practised in the 5 year period immediately preceding the due date unless it is satisfied that the person has sufficient physical capacity, mental capacity and competence to practise, is of good character and has an adequate command of the English language.
